Camp NaNoWriMo: Day Fifteen ... and WriteOnCon!

Halfway through the month already ... EEEP. Why is this year going by so fast?

I thought it was high time for a NaNo update! ELEGY is still going strong. It's been really fun switching between the storyline in 1880 and the storyline in 2012. It definitely keeps things new and fresh.

My favorite scene to write recently was the one where Henri (son of the wealthy Parisian gentleman) breaks into Ralph's secret cellar lair. Ralph was rescued by the gentleman from a horrible life in the circus, and his interests are a little... odd for a ten-year-old. I really liked discovering that creepy part of the chateau right alongside Henri.

I'm doing a LOT of backstory dumping, though. It'll have to be pruned out during revisions, but right now, I gotta keep going in the interest of word count.

I'm happy to say that I am participating in WriteOnCon for the first time! If you are serious about your writing (and by serious, I mean you want to shape your story into the best it can be, compose a kick-ass query letter, and get your work in front of fellow authors and ninja agents) there's no better place to get free critique and advice. I wish I'd joined sooner!

PPP's query letter is up on the chopping block, so feel free to go critique/comment/make fun of me. Everyone has been SO nice, supportive, and welcoming, and the best part is that I will have an ultra-polished pitch to send out to agents when I get back to querying! I've put it on hold to focus on Camp NaNoWriMo, but when I dive back in, I know I'll be in even better form.

Are you participating in Camp NaNo or WriteOnCon?

P.S. Remember to cast your vote for Round 7 of WRiTE Club! It's getting harder and harder to make decisions... the talent this time around is INCREDIBLE.

Glad you're making such good progress! I'm in the middle of revisions right now, and half of the manuscript was written in June during BuNo.

Great to hear you're on track with Camp NaNo, and WriteOnCon is now on my list for next year. ;)

I loved your query & finally getting the deets about PPP. :)

Also, you're doing great for CampNaNo! I got myself stuck and Alz badgers me every day about it. So much guilt. I'm trying to get back on track. :P

My participation is in GETMYWIPDONE!!!! lol And it's going horribly. Yours sounds great though! I can't wait to read your work someday.

Oh gawd don't remind me - I've been slinking away from camp hoping no one notices that the Camp Counselor's not on the premises anymore...

Hi Julie,

I went to WOC and read your query...I swear, if Disney doesn't buy your story and make it into a movie starring Selena Gomez, there is something wrong with the world!!

My fairytale loving girls would have LOVED this in their teens!!!

Wow!

Sounds like things are going great - that's wonderful! I wanted to do WriteOnCon, but I didn't find out about it until too late, and real life has been swamping us all week, so hopefully next year.

WOC was great this year, even though I didn't have anything to offer by way of queries or first pages. It was wonderful seeing you and other blog friends around, and some of novels being pitched in the forums were really good! I'm glad you had a good experience, Julie. Did you get a visit from a Ninja Agent, or even a (well-deserved) request for pages? :)

Sounds like you're staying busy! I did do WriteOnCon again this year and it was great. I haven't done NaNoWriMo yet, and haven't tried out Camp NaNoWriMo but maybe I will look into that one of these days.

Write on. It sounds like you're making progress. :)

I went back to work this week, so I'll have catch the WriteOnCon posts later.

WOC sounds great! Good luck buffing that pitch to perfection.

Pretty sure I'm going for NaNo in Nov, and I'm thinking it'll be something YA. Want to break out of my thriller comfort zone!

Sounds like an interesting story you've got going!

I leak backstory something awful in a first draft, mostly because I'm figuring it out as I go. I need it to be there, but most of it gets snipped out in Draft 2.

Darn Blogger!

I was trying to say: How was WriteOnCon? And I hope you could share stuff that you learned.

Jess: Thanks! Hope you had a great experience like I did :)

Alex: Haha BuNo? Sounds like you're making great progress too!

Nicole: I highly recommend it to anyone!

Krispy: Thanks! And glad that Alz has been badgering you :D Hope it's working!

Jessica: LOL. I love it. I should participate in that more often!

Sophia: Ahahah... get away from the smores and get back to writing!

Tiana: Thanks! The link to the query was taken down but if you wanna read it, I'll send it to you :D

Don: Totally. Maybe next year you'll hire some flunkies to work WRiTE Club for you while you relax at WOC :)

Shelley: Ahhh thanks!!! I have a friend in the publishing business and Disney Hyperion was the first house she mentioned that she thought would be perfect for PPP! (Scholastic was #2) Wishful thinking, right??

Connie: Thank you so much!

Louise: Oh yeah, this was the first year I had a little time for it. It was very worthwhile!

Colin: Unfortunately I got neither, but I got a very nicely polished query letter out of it so I think it was totally worth it!

Cynthia: Yeah I liked the idea of Camp NaNo since November is always so busy!!

Medeia: There are some great posts! Definitely check them out when you can.

Nick: Awesome! Sending good vibes to you for November NaNo!

Dianne: I'm the same way... draft two is always snip, snip, snip when it comes to backstory :)

Jay: I'll definitely do a post with what I learned!
